Bombay Scottish School has its origin in 1847 when a small orphanage for girls called the Scottish Female Orphanage came into being at Byculla. In 1855 a similar institution was established for boys and the two were united in 1859 under the name “The Bombay Male and Female Orphanage” which was altered in 1863 to that of “The Bombay Scottish Orphanage”. At a general meeting of the subscribers to the Bombay Scottish Orphanage held on 18th February, 1867, the Bombay Scottish Orphanage Society as it is known today was formed and established with its own constitution and rules. It came to be housed in its present location in Mahim in the year 1878. Though Bombay Scottish School was established for children of Scottish descent, it has opened its doors to all communities. In commemoration of 150 years of existence a school at Powai was established as an extension of the educational facilities to the community in its sesquicentennial year, 1997. The academic year which begins in June and ends in April comprises two terms: June-October, November – April. The courses of studies extend from Pre-School stage (KG) to Standard X at the end of which pupils appear for the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education Examination, New Delhi. n accordance with the recommendations of the Kothari Commission. Candidates for the ICSE examination are expected to have completed satisfactorily courses in a third language (Marathi), Art and Craft, Physical Education, Education in Moral and Spiritual values, Socially Useful and Productive Work and Community Service. These are assessed internally by the School and their results will count towards the award of I.C.S.E. pass certificate. Internal Assessment is now a part of the I.C.S.E. curriculum.
English is the medium of education. Hindi is introduced from Sr. Kg. onwards. Marathi, the regional language is taken up from Std. I to Std. VIII. Project Work is assessed from Standard I to Standard X. Field trips, social service visits and camps are part of the academic calendar. Art, Craft, Music, Physical Training, Gymnastics, Outdoor Games, Club activities, Extra Curricular and Co-curricular activities, are open to all classes.
