What is CLAT Exam?

JCommon Law Admission Test (CLAT) is a national level entrance exam conducted for admission to 21 prominent National Law Universities in India and other private universities. One who qualifies in CLAT can seek admission in 3-year/5-year Integrated LLB and LLM programmes.

The CLAT exam is conducted once in a year by the National Law University (NLU) among the 21 members NLUs of the CLAT Committee. The CLAT scores are used by other private law colleges across the country and Public Sector Undertakings for admissions and recruitment respectively.

Till 2018, CLAT was conducted on a rotation basis by NLUs. However, from 2019 onwards the CLAT will be conducted by a permanent body, ''Consortium of NLUs'' formed by NLUs. The body has its headquarters at NLSIU Bangalore.

The national-level entrance examination, CLAT, is conducted for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate law courses. Candidates who qualify in CLAT exam and stand above the cutoff can seek admission to the courses mentioned below at 21 NLUs in India.

  • CLAT Eligibility

    Candidates should pay an application fee of INR 300. The application fee for SC/ ST/ female applicants is INR 150. However, the application fee is waived for female applicants belonging to SC/ST. One should pay the application fee using debit/credit cards and net-banking.

    Undergraduate Courses

  • The is no upper age limit for undergraduate programmes in CLAT.
  • Candidates should obtain at least 45% marks in the 10+2 or its equivalent examination. It is 40% for the candidates belonging to SC/ST categories.
  • Candidates who are appearing for their final-year examination are also eligible to apply for the CLAT. However, they should produce evidence of passing at the time of admission.


  • Postgraduate Course
  • An LLB degree or its equivalent with 55% of marks is required to apply CLAT postgraduate examination. It is 50% of marks for candidates belonging to SC/ST categories.
  • Candidates appearing for the qualifying examination are also eligible to apply online.
  • There is no age limit for appearing.

    CLAT Application Form

    Candidates who are seeking admission to law courses in the NLUs and other private universities should register online through the official website of CLAT. Here are the steps to CLAT application form online.

    Step 1: Visit the official website of CLAT Consortium of NLU – www.clatconsortiumofnlu.ac.in 
    Step 2: On the homepage, click on the 'Register' 
    Step 3: Fill-in the basic details such as name, mobile number and email address. 
    Step 4: Upload the required documents that include the photograph and signature. 
    Step 5: Complete all the mandatory fields in the CLAT application form such as qualification and preference for NLUs. 
    Step 6: Pay the prescribed CLAT application fee 
    Step 7: Submit the application form 
    Step 8: Download the soft copy and take a printout for future reference.

    CLAT Application Fee

  • Application Fees can be paid only online.
  • Application Fee for General / OBC / PWD / NRI / PIO / OCI Candidates : Rs. 4,000/-.
  • Application Fee for SC / ST / BPL Category Candidates: Rs. 3,500/-.
  • The cost of previous years' question papers is Rs. 500/- (Not Included in the CLAT 2019 Application fee of Rs. 4,000/- or Rs. 3,500/- as the case may be).
  • The candidates themselves will have to bear the bank transaction charges for remitting the fee online. The actual bank transaction charges will be displayed in the payment gateway page after you choose the mode of payment.
  • Application Fees is non-refundable.


  • CLAT Exam Pattern

    The CLAT will be conducted in offline mode. It is an objective-paper and the total duration is two hours. Each correct answer will be awarded with one mark and 0.25 mark will be deducted for incorrect answer. The examination will be conducted in English language only.

    CLAT Syllabus 

    The CLAT syllabus covers different subject areas to test the candidates' proficiency in English, general awareness on static GK, basic calculation, critical thinking ability in logical reasoning and legal aptitude. Most of the sections are well known to many candidates except the legal aptitude. This section tests the candidate's on the study of law, research aptitude and problem-solving ability.

    CLAT Admit Card 2019

    Candidates who have successfully submitted their CLAT application forms need to visit the official website to download the admit card. Candidates can download the admit card/hall ticket by logging into his/her account.

    Applicants should note that without a valid CLAT admit card along with photo identity card for verification will not be allowed to sit in the exam centre. The exact date to download the CLAT admit card 2019 is not yet announced.

    CLAT Answer Key 2019

    The organising body will release the CLAT answer key within a week after the examination. Candidates who have appeared for the CLAT examination can access the answer key on the official website. One can cross-check the marked answers in the law examination which will give an idea of whether he/she will qualify or not. To access the CLAT answer key, candidates need to submit their registration number and date of birth/ password.

    CLAT Result 2019

    The organising institute will announce the CLAT result before three-week from the date of examination. The CLAT result will be available in online mode only. The test-takers will get only the information only on the qualifying status in CLAT result. Aspirants should enter the registration number or roll number along with the date of birth to access the CLAT result.

  • Enter the login details such as mobile number and password. 
  • Submit the details to access the result.

  • CLAT Cutoff Score 2019

    The CLAT cutoff score will be released after the declaration of result. Candidates must remember one important point that a minimum marks to be scored for admission into the NLUs. Once the CLAT result 2019 was announced, the organising institute will release the CLAT 2019 cut-off score. Candidates are advised to check the CLAT cut-off score for previous years.
