The COVID-19 pandemic has brought our education system to a halt as schools remain shut and a few are able to continue learning through online apps like Zoom or Skype. However, Class X and XII results are just about a month away, and the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education has decided to allow free movement of teachers and board officials to facilitate the transportation of answer sheets and other relevant materials.
The Additional Chief Secretary of the School Education Department, Vandana Krishna, wrote to all civic body chiefs of the state to facilitate the smooth movement of teachers as well as officials from the board. The letter also asked the BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) to provide relevant passes and information to accommodate teachers, officials, and other staff traveling to institutions. Additionally, vigilance teams are likely to be permitted to keep an eye on the grading process.
Class X exams in Maharashtra were conducted between March 3 and 23 whereas Class XII exams were held between February 18 and March 18. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has mandated that Class X and XII results need to be out by June 10.
The authorities usually release Class X results by mid-June while Class XII results are out by the end of May. Given the special circumstances that we’re currently facing, some leeway has been provided with the dates, although officials inspecting Class X answer sheets will have a shorter time than usual.
A teacher at Hansraj Morarji Public School, said, “There is still a lack of clarity over the marking scheme for the Class X geography paper that was cancelled. On May 4, teachers were instructed to go to school for examining answer sheets, but there is no facility of vehicles. Moreover, the decision to allow answer sheets to be assessed at home is much delayed.”
This raises some serious concerns with regard to the communication between the education department and the schools. Prashant Redij, the Secretary of Mumbai Principals Association, said, “Had a timely decision been taken, the answer sheets would have been assessed by now,” adding that they had approached the education department earlier on the same concerns.
State Higher Education Minister Uday Samant said on Tuesday that a committee has been set up to announce dates for the CET (Common Entrance Test) exams. This is one of the key exams taken by millions of aspirants each year and is considered essential for admissions into technical and other high-skill institutions. Additionally, Samant mentioned that counseling centres will be set in place for parents and students in every district of Maharashtra.
