Vidya Prasarak Mandal (VPM), a renowned educational trust in Thane, was established in August 1935 with the goal of creating a transformative educational ecosystem. The trust's fagship institution, B.N. Bandodkar Science College, owes its inception to the visionary leadership of Late Dr. V. N. Bedekar. His dream of building an “Island of Knowledge” (Jnandweepa) in Thane laid the foundation for this prestigious institution.

Dr. Bedekar believed that education was the cornerstone for developing the young generation of Thane into responsible and capable citizens. His determination to turn this dream into reality was supported by a dedicated team of colleagues, whose collective efforts led to the establishment of the college in 1969.

The institution owes a signifcant part of its early success to the generosity of Hon. Shri Dayanand Bandodkar, the then Chief Minister of Goa, who donated Rs. 3,20,000 to construct the college’s Science building. In 1975, the college shifted its afliation from the University of Pune to the University of Mumbai. For administrative convenience, B.N. Bandodkar College of Science was separated from the Arts and Commerce faculties, creating an independent single-faculty Science College. Today, it proudly stands as the only such college afliated with the University of Mumbai, upholding its commitment to excellence in science education.
